Welcome to the Media Society August newsletter. We hope you are having a great summer, wherever you are - and we would like to thank you all for your support during the first half of 2025.
In this newsletter, we have news about our new Mentoring Scheme, booking information for our next event, and a look back at the past 6 months.

Mentoring Programme
We’re pleased to announce the launch of the Media Society’s new Mentoring Programme. The aim is to connect experienced professionals with emerging talent across journalism, broadcasting, content creation and communications.
We are inviting applications from mentors to join the 2026 programme. If you’re an experienced media professional eager to share your knowledge and experience, we want to hear from you. (Mentee applications for 2026 will open later in the year).
Programme highlights: one-to-one mentoring, workshops and networking events, and a flexible commitment. The scheme is led by Media Society Vice President, Susan Morton.
It's easy to apply - just click on the link below, and you'll find more information and an online application form.

Coming Up: Migration and the Media
Our next event is an in-person debate in September at The Conduit in Covent Garden - discussing the highly topical issue of how the media covers migration.
From small boats crossing the English Channel to tension at the US-Mexico border, the migration debate is often framed through fear, crisis, and division.
But what role does the media play in the way that we all view migration?
This event is in partnership with The Conduit club. It's at 6pm on Monday, 22nd September.

Events Schedule
We have a busy schedule for the Media Society Autumn/Winter Season.
Following the Migration debate in September, the line-up will include a discussion on Gaza and Journalism in October, the Steve Hewlett Lecture with Channel 4's Matt Frei on 22nd October, an update on AI and the Media in November, the Society's AGM on 25th November, and the Media Society Christmas Drinks in December.
We'll also have our first Media Society on Tour event, with a debate about the Future of Journalism at Durham University on 14th November.
Events continue to be at the core of what we do as a Society. We are pleased that, earlier this year, the 2025 Spring/Summer Season had a series of high-profile discussion events, including Trump and the Media, the Rise of Newsletters, the Future of X and Social Media, and the Media and Climate Change.
Two of the events were in-person at The Conduit in Covent Garden - and were sold out. And two were online. All our events can now be viewed on the Media Society YouTube Channel.

Message from Nigel Dacre, the President of the Media Society
"The Media Society has moved up a gear in 2025 - organising more events and activities, and providing more benefits to members.
We've stepped up our events schedule, with two full seasons of debates and discussions. As you can see from our 2025 schedule, our events are covering many of the important media issues of the year - underlining the essential role that the Media Society plays in these troubled times.
As well as our events, we've also rebranded the Society, launched a new website, and reactivated our social media presence. And, as mentioned above, we've launched the TMS Mentoring Programme. Behind the scenes, we've introduced a new membership system, switched to a different newsletter platform, and reviewed our governance and Articles.
After the summer break, we want to keep the momentum going with a membership drive and our first series of Media Society Podcasts.
As ever, please contact us with questions or ideas."
