We have two important events coming up in October - a timely online Zoom discussion about Gaza and Journalism at 6pm on Tuesday 14th October, and then, in association with the Royal Television Society, the Steve Hewlett Lecture given by Channel 4's Matt Frei at the University of Westminster at 6.30pm on Wednesday 22nd October

Details below on both events...

British Media and the Gaza Conflict

An urgent Media Society panel debate via Zoom examining how British journalists view the complexities of covering the Israel/Gaza conflict.

The conflict is a rapidly evolving story - with the latest development being the peace proposal from President Trump. But throughout the conflict there have been questions and issues about how the media has covered the story, and how journalists have been able to report on the fighting.

Two years after the October 7th attack and the start of the war, our panel of senior British journalists will explore critical aspects of media coverage of the conflict, including Israel's restrictions on international press access, the unprecedented risks facing Palestinian journalists and camera crews, and language choices in reporting the conflict.

The panel so far includes Gavin Esler, the former BBC Newsnight presenter (who will chair the event), Jon Williams, from the Rory Peck Trust, and Richard Burgess, the Director of BBC News Content. The full panel will be announced shortly.

The event will be introduced by the Media Society President Nigel Dacre.
